The meaning and purpose of the outdoors have transformed it from being a place consumers spend time in after work or on weekends to a true extension of the home. Gardens, terraces, patios and balconies have become an extra living space to host events, for leisure activities, a working environment or sanctuary to relax in.

Design dining experience for both outdoor and indoor

“We’ve seen outdoor spaces breaching way more into the indoor spaces. This is the idea around flexibility. We want to segue between in and out and be borderless and free.”
- Marie Kristine Schmidt, the chief brand officer of Gubi, as featured in WGSN's coverage of Milan Design Week 2023.

Inspired by biophilic design and the cultural practice of honoring and showcasing objects, the plate is designed as a pedestal to elevate and highlight what it holds.

Instead of bending in four directions, two sides remain shorter and straight—not only to save costs but, more importantly, to make serving more intuitive for users.

The serving plate has an extended width to accommodate various food.

The napkin holder features wider corner openings, making it easier to pick up napkins from the corners.

Design Process

Sketches

Mock-ups

I created mock-ups while exploring form ideation. In the initial stage, I rapidly made mock-ups using paper and cardboard to develop the simplest shapes suitable for mass production and cost efficiency through cutting and bending. Using acrylic to test thickness, proportions, and bending details. Lastly, I brought the samples to factories to discuss materials and make test bending.

Technical drawings

Laser-cut the metal sheets before sending them for bending.
